Safe Motherhood Circles: Building a Culture of Care in Africa

August 4, 2025 glo Comments Off

In many African communities, childbirth is still a dangerous journey. Limited access to healthcare facilities, shortage of skilled birth attendants, and cultural barriers often leave women navigating pregnancy and delivery without the support or safety they deserve. But amid these challenges, a quiet revolution is taking place led by women, for women.

Safe Motherhood Circles are emerging as a grassroots solution to one of the continent’s most pressing health concerns: maternal mortality.

What Are Safe Motherhood Circles?

Safe Motherhood Circles are community-based support groups that bring together expectant and new mothers to share knowledge, receive care, and support one another throughout pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood. These circles are typically facilitated by trained community health workers, midwives, or even experienced mothers who guide the sessions.

Each circle offers:

  • Prenatal and postnatal education

  • Access to clean birth kits

  • Emotional and peer support

  • Referrals to nearby clinics or hospitals

  • Awareness around nutrition, warning signs, and newborn care

It’s not just about surviving childbirth—it’s about dignity, agency, and sisterhood.

Why They Matter

According to the World Health Organization, sub-Saharan Africa accounts for roughly 70% of global maternal deaths. The reasons are many: poor access to care, distance from health facilities, financial hardship, and cultural stigmas. But in communities where Safe Motherhood Circles are active, we see a shift:

  • More women deliver with skilled attendants

  • Antenatal check-up rates increase

  • Mothers feel more confident and informed

  • Traditional and modern practices find balance

These circles empower women with the tools and knowledge to make decisions for their health—decisions that can mean the difference between life and death.

How You Can Help

At AWACENIA, we believe no woman should face childbirth alone. Your support can help us expand Safe Motherhood Circles to more communities, provide training for facilitators, and ensure every mother has the tools she needs for a safe birth.
