Education as a Pathway to Opportunity

Education is more than a basic right. It is one of the most powerful ways to create opportunity, reduce inequality and give girls greater control over their futures.

Across Africa, many girls still face barriers that make it difficult to remain in school and complete their education. Poverty, gender inequality, early marriage and limited access to safe learning environments continue to affect their opportunities. UNESCO reports that 273 million children, adolescents and young people worldwide were out of school in 2024, with three quarters of them living in sub Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia. At AWACENIA, we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, develop her skills and build a future for herself. Through initiatives such as scholarships, literacy support and after school coding programmes, our aim is to help girls stay connected to education while developing skills that can prepare them for an increasingly digital world.

Why Girls’ Education Matters

The impact of educating a girl extends far beyond the classroom. World Bank research shows that each additional year of schooling increases earnings by around 10% on average. For women, an additional year of schooling has been associated with an average earnings increase of approximately 12% and returns in sub Saharan Africa have been estimated at around 13.5%. Education can also influence important life outcomes. World Bank research on girls in Africa found that each additional year of secondary education was associated with a reduction of about 7.5 percentage points in the risk of child marriage and 6.6 percentage points in the risk of having a child before the age of 18. These statistics remind us that educating girls is not only about academic achievement. It can create pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, greater independence and stronger participation in society.
